(185) DISPELLING THE OBSTACLES OF THE THOUGHTS OF YOGĪS1552

I pay homage to the venerable true gurus and Śrī Vajrasattva

You may wonder about the why, who, with what, and how of meditation,

its signs, qualities, hindrances and obstacles, and the dispelling of flaws

Through gaining familiarity while knowing those, awakening is attained

Not having heard and knowing them, there’s no accomplishment, or it’s tardy [1]

First, why meditate? Even if yogīs who do not relinquish the duality

of perceiver and perceived and do not meditate in a proper way

pay homage, make offerings, confess, and practice generosity a lot,1553

their merit may increase, but their wisdom will not be perfected [2]

Second, who [meditates]? Those who are endowed with yoga,

are well-studied and vigorous, keep their samayas and oaths,

make offerings, are generous, have faith, and possess bodhicitta

represent the vessels of the secret Mahāyāna and meditate [3]

Third, with what [do they meditate]? They are always resting,

without any distraction, in their own mind, in just the way it is,

which is uncontrived, primordially pure, free of discursiveness,

lacking the extremes of existence, nonexistence, permanence, and extinction [4]

Fourth, how is it that they meditate? Within the very own essence

of the nonduality of something to meditate on and meditation, {385}

there is nothing whatsoever and yet it appears as anything whatsoever —

they meditate lucidly without dullness, oblivion, or discursive thoughts [5]

Fifth, its signs are that in yogīs who are endowed with vigor,

first, it is sleep and greedy craving that will become diminished

Then, gradually, [the same goes for] desire and so on in their dreams,

and they show forms of miraculous displays according to their realization [6]

Sixth, their qualities arise in terms of thinking, expression,

direct perception, a prolonged life, healing sicknesses,

dispelling obstacles, and many qualities other than these

Accordingly, they progressively enter the path to awakening [7]

Seventh, as for hindrances and obstacles, if yogīs wish to go

somewhere else by leaving one place and seeking another,

they simply desire to go from one yaká¹£a to another

Once yogīs entered their minds, they cast off other places [8]

If yogīs who remain in a certain place while meditating

stopped speaking but then, when others enter or exit,

start seeking food and wealth due to haughtiness and craving,

the evil spirit of a greedy hungry ghost has entered their mind [9]

If yogīs whose minds are disturbed wish to quarrel,

Scold their retinues and revile others,

it is indeed the lord of the bhūtas, Yavaṣonapa,

who has entered the heart of such practitioners [10]

Should yogīs take pleasure in lying around and sleeping,

crave food and drink, and make no effort in chanting,

the mahoraga1554 called “the slothful one vigorous in sleep”

entered the minds of such yogīs, making them hang out [11]

Should yogīs guard the conditions of their own possessions {386}

and daily necessities, appoint guardians1555 to stake their claims,

seek sense pleasures to accumulate them, and wish to give them to others,

the yaká¹£a named Dhanaraká¹£a has entered their mind [12]

Should yogīs, out of attachment to their parents and the assemblies

of their siblings, protect them with aspiration prayers and services,

it is by virtue of their innate latent tendencies not becoming purified

that their afflictions are not relinquished, and awakening
